Synopsis:

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power – something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is the son of a farmer and an oracle from the frozen nation-planet of Thuvhe. Protected by his unusual currentgift, Akos is generous in spirit, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive – no matter what the cost.

Then Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, and the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. Will they help each other to survive, or will they destroy one another?

Favorite Lines:

“The best way to win a fight is to avoid having one.”

“If your enemy is a heavy sleeper, cut his throat before he wakes. If he’s soft-hearted, appeal to his compassion. If he’s thirsty, poison his drink.”

“I liked to practice – not because it made me a stronger fighter, though that was a welcome side benefit – but because I liked how it felt. The heat building, the pounding heart, the productive ache of tired muscles. The pain I chose, instead of the pain that had chosen me.”

“Whatever ease we found together was built on ignoring the facts.”

“Growing up here has made me see the truth about people.”

“Being nice is a matter of survival.”

“Maybe whatever small trust I had felt for Akos, whatever appeal he had held, had come because he offered me relief. Because I was so grateful for the reprieve from pain – and from isolation- that my heart had softened. I had been stupid.”

“It was hard to say whether he wasn’t speaking to me, or I wasn’t speaking to him. In any case, we didn’t exchange words.”

“To continue to love someone so far beyond help, beyond redemption, was madness.”

“But that was just a memory for him. Not even a clear one.”

“It was both a joke and not a joke.”

“The truth can be suppressed but it can never be erased.”

“Everything was loud and hurried, like my heart.”

“I shouldn’t have marveled at the way words could hit me like a hard punch to the stomach. But hope had made me a fool.”

“Of course, but you know, with a mind as dull as mine, I forget things like this all the time.”

“How do you feel about doing me a favor?” “Depends on the favor.”

“See, answering that would be a form of telling you why I want to find her, which I just said I wouldn’t do.”

“Homesick was the wrong word. Lost was the right one – lost out in the nothingness, among people he didn’t understand.”

“I tell lies better than I tell truths.”

“I am a Shotet. I am as sharp as broken glass, and just as fragile. I tell lies better than I tell truths. I see all of the galaxy and never catch a glimpse of it.”

“I just knew that I had spent too long standing still while others warred around me, and it was time to move.”

“Desperate people make stupid decisions all the time.”

“Rain drummed on the roof.”

“What? I don’t have any friends. It gives me a lot of free time.”

“I know what I am. A knife. A hot poker. A rusty nail.”

“I may be a fool, too. But I am not stupid.”

“To unseat your brother and restore Shotet society to what it was before your family soiled it with inequity.”

“Power in one place tended to transfer to power elsewhere.”

“Losing words on the way to his mouth.”

“This body had carried me through a hard life. It looked exactly the way it was supposed to.”

“The gift comes from me. An expression of my personality. My gift unfolded from the deeper parts of me and it would only change as I changed.”

“You saw me as someone better than I was. You told me that I could choose to be different than I had been, that my condition was not permanent.”

  1. I still haven’t read this, and I have no idea why because I loved her Divergent series (I was pretty obsessed). I love the cover, and it sounds really good! My friend is reading it right now and I was asking her about it a few days ago, I’m so excited to try it 🙂

    1. Maybe you have a bookhangover with the Divergent Series? I was obsessed with it as well. 😂 The cover is really nice and I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but I’ll make an exception for this one. Haha 😂 I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! 😄
